Valmont’s Custom Poles at Wrigley Field’s New Plaza in Chicago, IL
In preparation for the Chicago Cubs’ 2017 season, Wrigley Field was looking for custom-shaped light poles to decorate its new “The Park at Wrigley” plaza area just outside the stadium. Although their first attempt with another pole manufacturer fell short due to structural and budget concerns, Valmont proved yet again the only one capable of taking on the challenge.
The new plaza was to feature three different size custom steel poles, which would resemble the I-beams used on the stadium structures. The customer also needed the poles to be strong enough to enable them to mount light fixtures, speakers, screens and cameras. In order to imitate the shape and ensure structural soundness, Valmont welded together square-shaped tubes and angle irons. Because of the unique character, Valmont placed the hand hole for electrical equipment at the side of a longer square tube, making it possible to hide all wiring inside the pole. In addition, custom-made arms provided a platform for light fixtures and banners. Lastly, the customer chose Valmont’s V-PRO finish system with a 5-year warranty to enhance the resistance of the poles against the varying Chicago climate.
Thanks to Valmont’s efficient manufacturing capabilities and commitment to turning our customer’s concept to reality, Valmont and Lighting Solutions of Illinois delivered all 16 poles within budget and well before the April 10 deadline that marked the Cubs’ 2017 home opener and the official opening of The Park at Wrigley.
