Valmont’s Highly Engineered Deco-Poles Modernize Nason Street Bridge
Back in 2013, City of Moreno Valley, CA was looking for decorative and durable poles that would help light the way for people crossing over the Nason Street Bridge. As one of the main connector bridges in the area, the city wanted a unique design that would provide a warm welcome to arriving visitors while still meeting all the safety requirements for the area and application. While many other pole companies showed interest in the project, only Valmont was able to meet all of the customer’s complex needs.
To address the danger of earthquakes in the area, the poles needed to comply with California’s seismic code. In addition, because of the major traffic passing by on the bridge and on the freeway below, vibration had to be taken into careful consideration. To further the complexity, the bridge rail had limited space for mounting the poles. With decades of experience with the Caltrans design requirements, vibration issues, and mounting limitations, Valmont’s engineers were able to quickly develop a pole design that mounted to the outer sides of the bridge and could withstand the environment.
Besides the safety requirements, Moreno Valley emphasized the need for appealing and up-scale aesthetics that would catch people’s attention and enhance the city’s image. With a wide range of decorative poles available, Valmont created a look that met the customer’s needs. Instead of selecting traditional fixed pole arms, the city chose an adjustable design to eliminate any chance of light trespass. Due to its global presence, Valmont was able to manufacture the chosen decorative arms in Europe while simultaneously developing parts in Valmont’s factories around the U.S. The poles were fitted with decorative finials and pole bases, which created an enhanced look. Finally, Valmont’s V-PRO paint system was chosen to increase the longevity of the finish.
The 10 customized poles on Nason Street Bridge serve as a bright example of first-class engineering and decoration, and as the population of Moreno Valley grows, Valmont will continue to provide unrivaled service to the area. Thanks to the seamless cooperation between the City of Moreno Valley, Valmont, and South Coast Lighting, the city’s streets are in good hands.
