Valmont’s Curved Steel Poles Highlight MGM Grand Detroit’s Area Art
After operating in a temporary building for several years, 2007 marked the year in which MGM Grand finally opened its $800 million casino resort in downtown Detroit. This was the first luxury casino hotel destination to open in a major metropolitan center outside of Las Vegas. It featured lavish design all the way from Art Deco interiors to the artwork outside the building. When the resort was being constructed, MGM’s designer reached out to Valmont with a request for a unique pole that would provide character and bring the casino’s outdoor display area to life during the dark nights of the Motor City.
Valmont’s curved Idyline aluminum pole design had caught the designer’s eye at a trade show, and he wanted to use it as a starting point for the new poles. Due to the distinctive curved shape of the envisioned poles, their extended height, and the vision to mount several light fixtures on them, Valmont’s engineering team decided to use steel as the pole material to ensure high durability. Valmont’s custom engineering skills seamlessly combined the curved design of our aluminum products with our existing straight steel products. As a result, Valmont’s first-ever curved steel pole for area lighting was born.
With custom design and manufacturing capabilities that no other light pole company offers, Valmont delivered two distinctive poles that bring a fresh and uplifting atmosphere to the heart of the established urban area. For the upscale design and luxurious image it has brought to Detroit, the casino received the prominent ‘Development of the Year 2007’ award at the 2008 Americas Lodging Investment Summit. Most importantly, Valmont efficiently provided MGM Grand Detroit with a product that enhanced the casino’s vision for a glamorous entrance.
