Valmont Decorates the City of Campbell with Custom-Made “Fruit Poles”
In 2014, the City of Campbell, CA contacted Valmont with a unique vision for a street lighting project. The city’s engineers had drawn a simple sketch featuring a pole that looked like a tree, but none of their previous pole partners were able to create it. Fortunately, with decades of custom project experience, Valmont was able to help.
To start the project design phase, the original handmade drawing was recreated electronically using a design software. Next, Valmont’s engineers began refining the design based on the customer’s needs. Because the project was in California, the engineering team modified the design to ensure that it aligned with the Caltrans design criteria. The resulting product featured a 17.5-foot pole with three different size luminaire arms. After several minor amendments to the design, the city felt like something was still missing. Therefore, to further emphasize the nature theme, Valmont welded a decorative leaf on each luminaire arm. Prior to adding the primer and top paint layers, the poles were galvanized to maximize their corrosion resistance. Finally, the city selected a special “Emerald Green” top coat to match the color scheme of the surrounding structures and scenery.
In the end, the “Fruit Poles” were delivered within budget and time constraints and they were exactly what the city was looking for. Thanks to innovative ideas and Valmont’s capabilities to consult and convert architectural designs into functioning structures, the City of Campbell now has totally custom, structurally sound poles that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. While many custom pole projects may seem difficult to realize, Valmont welcomes the challenge to turn a concept into a reality for our customers.
