Omaha’s World-Leading Zoo Trusts in Valmont’s Engineering
Determined to continually improve its visitor experience, the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, NE developed a $174 million, 10-year enhancement plan in 2010. The developments included the new African Grasslands exhibit as well as expanded parking areas and pathways that required various types of light poles. The zoo contacted Valmont knowing that it could trust the market leader to deliver aesthetic excellence, structural integrity, and engineering acumen.
The zoo requested light poles that not only enhanced the aesthetic feel but also blended into the overall look of the area. Utilizing Valmont engineering and customization, a modular design was developed which enabled the client to select the pole, decorative arms, banner arms, base, and finish from various options. For the smaller area lighting structures, the zoo selected LED lighting fixtures to improve energy efficiency and aluminum poles to reduce the weight and prevent corrosion. In areas where taller mounting height was required, Valmont utilized its round tapered steel options for increased loading capacity. Thanks to Valmont’s experienced engineers and broad selection of materials, products, and finish capabilities, the zoo was able to easily choose the assemblies that met all their needs.
The zoo’s investment in the new infrastructure and other improvements has paid off. In 2013 and 2014 the Henry Doorly Zoo took 1st place in TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice awards for the World’s Best Zoo. A total of 71 street lighting poles and several area lighting poles have been installed thus far, and Valmont is looking forward to continuing this great partnership.
