Valmont Light Poles Enhance San Antonio’s Historic Look
When the City of San Antonio, TX took on the project of realigning Market Street to better accommodate the local convention center, they turned to Valmont, known for custom engineering capabilities. In 2012, the city began planning for an expansion of the convention center that had grown to be a popular venue for a variety of events. In order to make room for the extension, Market Street would need to be moved. Originally the road cut through a field behind the convention center, leaving a large area of prime real estate space unused.
The city wanted the new poles to have a nostalgic and upscale style to fit with San Antonio’s rich heritage. To accomplish this look, Valmont assembled the poles using several decorative components including 16-flat fluted steel poles, Windsor arms, and Acorn finials. The poles also needed to be highly durable to withstand the busy urban environment, so Valmont used break-away banner arms, Huntington-style Enduro base covers, and green powder coating to provide added protection for the poles.
In August 2014, the eastern part of Market Street reopened and now shines with 78 tailor-made Valmont poles. Because of the required blend of decorative features, long-lasting materials and proprietary products, Valmont was the top vendor capable of taking on this project and making it a success. In addition, Valmont’s implementation was cost and time-efficient thanks to the wide range of available in-house resources.
