A Warm Welcome for Elmwood Park Zoo’s Next Century
Founded in 1924, Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, Pennsylvania, welcomes more than 500,000 visitors each year and is home to over 100 animal species. Construction began in 2023 to create a new “front door” for the community zoo, starting at Centennial Plaza, an open outdoor space, and including the zoo’s new Welcome Center and Veterinary Health Center.
The outdoor areas needed additional lighting to complement the landscape and enhance safety. To achieve this lighting upgrade, Penn Lighting Associates turned to Valmont to help develop more than a dozen 22-foot wood light poles.
Tehomet, a Valmont company, offers several pole styles, including round non-tapered, square-to-round, and more. The team selected the Ruka poles, which are square and non-tapered. They were the perfect option to complement the zoo’s new look and provide pedestrian lighting in the area.
Next, the team collaborated with Signify to engineer Lumec LED fixture mounts to spec. The pole’s finish was carefully selected to match the landscape aesthetic, while the LED lighting helps conserve energy resources and supports safety.
The beautiful expansion of the zoo, which opened in 2024, welcomes visitors to a refreshed experience at a treasured community attraction that generations have enjoyed for 100 years. Valmont is proud to have supported this expansion that brings the community closer together to explore, enrich and improve lives.
